Organizers say the immediate significance of the petition was, “to unite all kanaka maoli as descendants of the people who signed their names in solidarity 117 years ago to secure their continued existence as an independent nation.”

Nā Kupuna will honor ancestors who signed the petition and will have copies of the petition book available for viewing at an education table set up at the event.

In addition to educational material, the event also features Hawaiian music, arts and crafts.
