Free Information Session to Cover Childhood Immigration Topic

A free informational session focusing on child immigration issues takes place this Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Maui Economic Opportunity building in Wailuku.

The session is free and open to the public, and is hosted by the County of Maui department of Housing and Human Concerns’ Immigrant Services Division.

Personnel will explain the process of initial “Deferral Action for Childhood Arrival” and how to apply for renewal.

County officials cited the US Citizenship and Immigration Services website, saying a Deferral Action for Childhood Arrival may be granted if the following conditions are met and documented by an individual as required:

• Was under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012;
• Came to the United States before reaching their 16th birthday;
• Has continuously resided in the United States since June 15, 2007, up to the present time;
• Was physically present in the United States on June 15, 2012, and at the time of making their request for consideration of deferred action with USCIS;
• Had no lawful status on June 15, 2012;
• Is currently in school, has graduated or obtained a certificate of completion from high school, has obtained a general education development certificate, or is an honorably discharged veteran of the Coast Guard or Armed Forces of the United States; and
• Has not been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor, or three or more other misdemeanors, and does not otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety.
