A Brown Water Advisory has been issued for West Maui from Honolua Bay to Puʻu Kekaʻa (Black Rock) in Kāʻanapali, and Hanakaʻōʻō Beach Park in West Maui.

The State Department of Health Clean Water Branch is advising the public to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to: possible overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals, and associated flood debris.

Department officials say turbid water runoff has been known to attract sharks due to possible dead animals being washed into the ocean.

If coastal waters are brown, the public is urged to stay out.

The brown water advisory was issued due to heavy rains in the area reported overnight and into today.
