Hawaiʻi County Mayor Billy Kenoi will be joining the 2015 Maui County Council Inauguration to give the keynote speech.  The ceremony to usher in the 2015-2017 term of council members will occur on Jan. 2 at 10 a.m. in the Council Chamber, and is open to the public.

Kenoi was invited to speak by Council Chair Gladys Baisa, following his commencement speech at Hawaiʻi Pacific University earlier this year.  A video of the mayor’s speech has gone viral online.

During the inauguration council members will take an oath of office administered by Judge Richard Bissen.  Members who will be taking the oath include Baisa, Robert Carroll, Elle Cochran, Don Couch, Stacy Crivello, Don Guzman, G. Riki Hokama, Michael Victorino, and Mike White.

The ceremony will also include an opening pule by Kumu Kimokea Kapahulehua and entertainment by Carmen “Hulu” Lindsey and her daughter Napua Greig.

The council will hold an organizational meeting beginning at 2 p.m. to elect officers, set up standing committees, establish rules, and appoint staff positions.

Both events will broadcast live on Akakū Channel 53.
