Up-cycled Bags Donated to Maui Homeless Outreach Program

A Cup of Cold Water, an outreach program helping Maui’s homeless community, received a donation of 10 drawstring backpacks today from a Maui designer.

Joy Webster who operates a studio in Makawao says the Bag of Joy delivery includes bags made from up-cycled upholstery and sample materials.

It is the second donation that she made this year this year.

Webster’s business receives donations of outdated fabric from several interior designers on Maui.  She then uses the fabric to create one-of-a-kind designer bags, aprons and accessories to sell online and at local craft fairs.

Webster also gives bags and aprons to silent auction fundraisers when asked, and sells products at the Kula Marketplace on Maui.

“My raw materials are free to me, so what better way to say mahalo than to donate to charities making a difference on Maui,” said Webster in a statement. “We keep good, usable fabric out of the landfill, make unique designer items, and support our community.”

The bags donated to A Cup of Cold Water are simple backpacks with an interior pocket and secure drawstring closure.

In addition to her recent donation, a percentage of all online sales through Webster’s Bag of Joy website are donated to local nonprofits each month.  During the month of February sales are dedicated to A Cup of Cold Water.
