Lei Day Heritage Festival 2015 at Bailey House Museum May 1
The public is invited to celebrate Hawaiʻi’s May Day tradition at Bailey House Museum’s free Lei Day Heritage Festival 2015 on May 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event will include free museum tours, arts and crafts workshops, special exhibitions, cultural demonstrations, guest speakers, food vendors and a lei contest.
“We want to provide an enjoyable, educational, free community event on May Day,” said Executive Director Kumu Sissy Lake-Farm. “We want to bring awareness and encourage participation in Hawaiian cultural activities to the residents and visitors of Maui.”
Special guest Kimo Alama Keaulana will present “Nā Mele O Nā Wahi Pana O Maui, Songs of Maui’s Sacred Places.”
Tom Fairbanks of Old Wailuku Inn at Ulupono will present a talk about Don Blanding, “The Father of May Day.”
Walter and Luana Kawaiaeʻa will perform their ʻUkulele Play Along.
Local artisans will lead free workshops on flower, feather, ti leaf and native plants lei making.
The event will also offer lauhala weaving, cordage making and poi pounding workshops.
The Maui Historical Society, with The Haynes Family Foundation and the L. H. Dorcy Hawaiian Foundation, is sponsoring a free lei contest, offering over $300 in prizes.
The event is sponsored by the Maui Historical Society, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the Old Wailuku Inn at Ulupono and The Haynes Family Foundation.
The Bailey House Museum, Hale Hōʻikeʻike, operated by the nonprofit Maui Historical Society, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The museum is located at 2375-A Main Street in Wailuku.
