Krispy Kreme, Salvation Army partner for National Donut Day, June 5
By Maui Now Staff
Krispy Kreme Kahului and The Salvation Army on Maui have partnered up for today’s observation of National Donut Day.
In celebration of the annual event, one free donut will be given to each customer on June 5, 2015 while supplies last with a percentage of proceeds from sales of additional donuts to benefit the Kahului Corps of The Salvation Army.
The event will take place at the Maui Krispy Kreme located at 433 Kele Street in Kahului and will run from 6 to 11 a.m. or until the free donut supplies run out.
The Salvation Army started National Donut Day 78 years ago as a way to raise funds and bring awareness to their social service programs.
Donut Day is held annually on the first Friday of June, and commemorates “Donut Lassies,” female volunteers for The Salvation Army during World War I, who provided writing supplies, stamps, clothes-mending and home-cooked meals (including donuts) to soldiers on the front lines.
According to The Salvation Army, the Donut Lassies would fry donuts in the soldiers’ helmets on the front lines, just seven donuts at a time.
