An undetermined amount of wastewater entered the Kāʻanapali Golf Course Pond today following an electrical failure at the Lahaina Pump Station during a generator test.

Officials with the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management say the overflow was reported at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2015, and was stopped by 10 a.m.

Authorities say the overflow occurred at the Lahaina Pump Station No. 2 along the Honoapiʻilani Highway and flowed from a sewer manhole into a storm drain and discharged into the golf course pond.

County officials say the area was cleaned and disinfected, warning signs were posted, and the State Department of Health was notified of the incident. Bacteriological tests are also being conducted to determine if the spill reached the ocean.
