Fatality Reported in Haleakalā Highway Collision

Today at approximately 12:24 p.m., a vehicle collision occurred on Haleakalā Highway .6 miles north of Palena Place in Kula.
A 2014 Nissan Maxima four-door sedan was traveling down Haleakalā Highway (Crater Road), when it failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway.
The vehicle then drove off the paved roadway onto the right shoulder, where it collided into the embankment and a large boulder.
The operator was identified as a 72-year-old male from China. All five five occupants of the vehicle are adults nationals vacationers from the People’s Republic of China.
The three rear-seat passengers were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the collision. One of the passengers was soon pronounced dead at the Maui Memorial Medical Center due to injuries sustained.
The other two passengers remain at the Maui Memorial Medical Center, where they continue to undergo treatment for their injuries.
Identification of the deceased male passenger is pending until notification to his family can be
made.
The operator and front seat passenger of the Nissan Maxima were wearing their seatbelts.
None of the three rear seat passengers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the
collision. The vehicle airbags did deploy in the collision.
