By Maui Now Staff
On Monday, July 6, 2015, at approximately 8:49 p.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Hāna Highway and Hoʻokele Street in Kahului as a Ford F-150 pickup truck traveled east on Hāna Highway and collided with a Ford Taurus four-door sedan turning left onto Hoʻokele Street from Hāna Highway.
The Ford Taurus was traveling north on Hāna Highway prior to executing the left turn at Hoʻokele Street from a designated left-turn lane.
The 72-year-old male driver of the Taurus and the 16-year-old male passenger riding in the rear driver’s-side seat were pronounced dead at the scene.
The other two passengers of the Ford Taurus were transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
The driver of the Ford F-150 pickup truck was treated for minor injuries and released by medics at the scene.
Names of the deceased are being withheld pending next-of-kin notifications.
The driver of the Ford Taurus was a resident of Washington state; the 16-year-old passenger was a resident of Idaho.
It does not appear as if the operator or the occupant of the Ford pickup truck was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. All four occupants of the Ford Taurus were wearing their seatbelts.
THe airbags in both vehicles deployed.
