Pohaku Dance Performance Preview Thursday at The MACC
By Maui Now Staff
Christopher Morgan will offer a free preview of Pohaku, a new dance theater piece and a “work-in-progress,” on Thursday, July 16, at 7 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater.
Pohaku will officially premiere next spring.
The solo performance–approximately 35 to 45 minutes in length–will be followed by a question-and-answer session with choreographer/dancer Morgan.
.
Pohaku brings together modern dance, hula, classical music, storytelling and projection to explore compelling universal themes in the story of native Hawaiians, including land loss and fractured identity.
Inspired by the work of Morgan’s late cousin, hula master John Kaimikaua, collaborators include members of Kaimikaua’s Hālau Hula o Kukunaokalā, classically trained electric cellist Wytold, projection designer Sareen Hairabedian and kapa maker Dalani Tanahy.
