A public hearing will be held on a request for a special use permit and a conditional permit to allow for the development and operation of a transient camp in West Maui.

The Kauaula Campgrounds facility is proposed to help the transient, homeless and financially disadvantaged community according to meeting notice.

The request is being made to the State Land Use Commission by Lisa Darcy and the Hoʻomana Foundation and is proposed for location near Hokiokio Place and the Lahaina Bypass Road.

The item surfaces for review at tomorrow’s meeting (Tuesday, July 28, 2015) of the Maui Planning Commission.

The commission may also take action on a request for a special management area use permit for the proposed Downtown Kīhei project.

The project consists of business, commercial, retail and hotel uses on approximately 27.4 acres of land adjacent to Piʻikea Avenue in South Maui.

The project also includes plans for a movie theater, on-grade deck parking, a village square, a select services hotel, and retail and commercial buildings. A public hearing was conducted at a meeting last August.
