Makawao Brush Fire Burns Half-Acre of Pasture Land

A brush fire in Makawao on Friday afternoon, July 31, 2015, burned a half-acre of pasture land off of the Haleakalā Highway before being brought under control.

The fire was first reported at around 5:35 p.m., and was extinguished by 6:30 p.m., according to department reports.

Maui Fire Services Officer Edward Taomoto said the fire burned an area of grass off of the highway, just mauka of King Kekaulike High School.

Crews from the Makawao station worked to contain the fire with help from Kula fire personnel.

The cause of the fire was undetermined.  No structures were threatened and no injuries reported.

The fire forced the temporary closure of the highway between King Kekaulike High School and Kealaloa Avenue while crews battled the blaze.

All roads have since reopened.
