Maui police held a press conference this morning in which they released further details relating to an officer involved shooting that ended with one man dead on Wednesday evening at Keōpūolani Park in Wailuku. Police, who have yet to release the suspect’s name, say the 39-year-old man with no local address, was shot multiple times by officers. During an initial investigation police recovered over 50 shell casings, nine of them from the perpetrator. Police say the man sustained an estimated 11 gun shot wounds that were located on various parts of his body from his legs to the top of his torso, according to Maui Police Captain David Silva, Commander of the department’s Criminal Investigative Division.
Police confirmed that three officers were involved in the shooting.
Police say the suspect had reportedly been impersonating a law enforcement officer and was holding what he claimed was a US Immigration badge. Police say he was dressed in plain clothes–a long sleeve shirt and tie and slacks. He was roughly 5’10” tall, described as thin, and weighed between 140 and 150 pounds.
“This individual (the caller) was at the park and the perpetrator went up to him and I guess was questioning him about why he was there and actually had a badge that said he was a law enforcement (officer),” said Capt. Silva. The caller became suspicious and called police.
Police say the suspect was on Maui for about two years, and prior to that, he was on Oʻahu for about three years. Police confirmed that he had a prior arrest record in California.
The gun used by the suspect was described as a 9 mm and was registered to a business.
Police say that when the incident occurred, a witness was standing approximately a few feet behind where the incident took place a van was in the parking lot with two individuals within.
“He did speak with the police officers, became confrontational, and there were words exchanged. As what they were,” I cannot tell you right now,” said Capt. Silva.
