A Maui man suffered fatal injuries in a moped crash on the Honoapiʻilani Highway on Thursday night.

Maui police have since identified the man as 58-year-old Richard Bryan Lujan of Lahaina.

The incident was reported at 10:21 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015 on the highway, just past the Shaw Street intersection.

According to police reports, Lujan was operating a 2014 moped, and traveling south on the highway when he struck a raised curb on the west side shoulder of the road.

Police say Lujan subsequently fell off of the moped and was fatally injured.  He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to a preliminary investigation filed by Sergeant Kenneth Kihata with the Maui Police Department’s Vehicle Homicide Unit.

Police implemented a partial road closure in the area while they conducted an investigation and cleared the roadway of debris.

Authorities say the involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.

This was Maui County’s 17th traffic fatality for 2015, compared to 17 at the same time last year.
