According to police reports, Lujan was operating a 2014 moped, and traveling south on the highway when he struck a raised curb on the west side shoulder of the road.

Police say Lujan subsequently fell off of the moped and was fatally injured.  He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to a preliminary investigation filed by Sergeant Kenneth Kihata with the Maui Police Department’s Vehicle Homicide Unit.

Police implemented a partial road closure in the area while they conducted an investigation and cleared the roadway of debris.
