The Horticulture Section of the Maui Fair has announced its Presentations Schedule for 2015. Aspiring growers and gardeners alike are invited to stop by to find out how foods grow, pick up hints on gardening and learn behaviors of local insects. Questions on scheduled topics are welcome.

Thursday, Sept. 24

  • 5 to 8 p.m.: Pest of the Hour (ongoing) Something “bugging” your plants? Drop by to take a look at some of Maui’s pesky insects.
  • 8 to 11 p.m.: Healthy Living Across the Lifespan (presentation on the hour: 8, 9, 10 p.m.) Smoothie demonstration and taste testing. Followed by Q&A, activities, resources, and games related to healthy living programs for youth/4-H and older adults.

Friday, Sept. 25

  • 5 to 8:30 p.m.: Technology for Independent Living (presentation on the hour: 6, 7, 8 p.m.) Simple technology that allows older adults to live more independently. Followed by Q&A, activities, games and resources related to independent living.
  • Probiotics of Poi Beverages, Rate your Favorite (ongoing)
  • 8:30 to 11 p.m.: Flower Arranging Workshop (presentation on the half hour: 8:30, 9:30, 10:30 p.m.)
  • Ask the Weed Scientist (Q&A ongoing) Got weeds? Get answers!

Saturday, Sept. 26

  • 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: 4-H in the 21st Century: Moving Beyond Ag, Crafts and Sewing (presentation on the hour (11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m.) 4-H opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Followed by Q&A, activities, games and resources relating to 4-H opportunities.
  • Ask the Weed Scientist (Q&A ongoing) Got weeds? Get answers!
  • 1:30 to 5 p.m.: Urban Gardening Seed Starts (presentation on the hour: 2, 3, 4 p.m.) All plants start as a seed. Learn seed-starting essentials, tips for healthy seed starts, and benefits of using local seed. UH seed packets will be available for sale at $1/package.
  • Rethink Your Drink (presentations on the half hour: 1:3, 2:30, 3:30 p.m.) Learn about beverage options and take the water challenge.
  • 5 to 8:30 p.m.: Cabbage Tasting and Plant Sale (ongoing)
  • 8:30 to 11 p.m.: Mango grafting (presentation on the half hour: 8:30, 9:30, 10:30 p.m.)
  • 9 & 10 p.m.: Safety in the Kitchen Interactive game to test your kitchen safety
    smarts.

Sunday, Sept. 27

  • 10 to 1:30 p.m.: Urban Gardening Seed Starts (presentation on the half hour: 10:30, 11:30 a.m., noon) All plants start as a seed. Learn seed-starting essentials, tips for healthy seed starts, and benefits of using local seed. UH seed packets will be available for sale at $1/package.
  • 10 a.m. to 1 pm.: Clean Your Huli Demonstration on the hour: 10, 11 a.m., noon,1 p.m.) Demonstration on cleaning and sterilizing your taro huli of pesty hitchhikers.
  • 1:30 to 5 p.m.: Pest of the Hour (ongoing) Something “bugging” your plants?  Drop by to take a look at some of Maui’s pesky insects.
  • 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.: Mango Grafting Presentation on the hour (2:30, 3:30, 4:30 p.m.)
  • 5 to 7 p.m.: Mango Grafting Presentation on the hour: 5:30, 6:30 p.m.)
  • Ask the Weed Scientist (Q&A ongoing) Got weeds? Get answers!
