The Sustainable Living Institute of Maui will offer a three-day workshop to learn and practice the art of building with bamboo on Oct. 31 (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.), Nov. 14 (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and Nov. 21 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
Instructor Rich von Wellsheim, who has decades of experience growing and using bamboo, will lead participants through the uses of bamboo and how to design structures on day one. Day two is in the shop, learning the tools and methods for joining and lashing bamboo, while creating parts of a structure. Day three will offer the opportunity to erect the bamboo structure with the skills learned.
Bamboo is the original sustainable building material. Bamboo homes are sprinkled around Maui and bamboo is used for hundreds of purposes.
To register, go to edventuremaui.com and click on “Agriculture and Horticulture” in the “Career Training” dropdown menu. The cost of the workshop has been discounted from $449 to $399.
