Firefighters responding to a distress call on the Lahaina Pali Trail on Tuesday afternoon arrived to find an uninjured woman who appeared to be distraught about her dog, who was not moving.

The incident was reported at around 3:51 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015.

Firefighters determined that the 80 pound, 5-year-old golden retriever had died.

Crews consoled the woman and led her about a mile down the trail while firefighters carried the dog down in a rescue basket.

Authorities later learned that the woman on the trail was not the owner but a friend taking the dog on a hike.

Fire officials say it is unknown how the dog died.
