1st Maui Spirit of Survival Walk Against Breast Cancer Raises $3K

The 1st Annual Maui Spirit of Survival Walk Against Breast Cancer raised an estimated $3,000 for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program. The walk was held in Wailea on Oct. 31, and was organized by Brian J. Burns in honor of his three sisters–one survivor, and two taken by the disease.

Burns said he created the walk on Maui so everyone touched by this disease on Maui has an opportunity to show support for one another as well as raise funds to fight Breast Cancer.

Burns initially reached out to Making Strides as a volunteer, but created the Maui event after learning that the program only hosted a walk on Oʻahu.

“This walk is a necessity for our community in the fight against Breast Cancer. There has been an overwhelming show of support for this event.  I am filled with joy (that) the community embraced and supported the event with Aloha so quickly ” said Burns.

Burns said the Walk will be held annually on the last Saturday of October along the scenic Wailea Beach path.

During the inaugural event, more than $2000 worth of prizes donated by local businesses in support of efforts to fight Breast Cancer were given away to participants.

Burns noted that 100% of the proceeds for Making Strides donations will go toward research and Patient services here in Hawaiʻi.
