Akakū to Host Fourth Walk of Heroes Celebration
Akakū Community Media will present a stellar lineup of musicians and other performers at this year’s Maui Walk of Heroes celebration and block party on Sunday, Nov. 15, at 333 Dairy Road in Kahului from 3 to 7 p.m., marking the fourth year that Akakū has honored individuals who are undisputed heroes in our community.
Comedian and Master of Ceremonies Andy Bumatai will kick off the festivities at 3 p.m. with all-star musicians Fulton Tashombe and Joe Cano.
At about 3:30 p.m., Kumu Hokulani Holt will officially open the proceedings with an oli and performance by her hālau followed by video highlights and the official “hands and feet in cement” ceremony.
In addition to Holt, Speaker of the House Joe Souki and Hawaiian music sensation Barry Flanagan of HAPA will be enshrined in the Maui Walk of Heroes alongside former inductees, including Sen. Rosalyn Baker, Richard Hoopi‘i, Kimokeo Kapahulehua, Amy Hanaiali‘i, George Kahumoku Jr., Keali’i Tau‘a, Teya Penniman, Sean McLaughlin and former Gov. Neil Abercrombie.
Flanagan will take the stage at around 5 p.m., and after a few short videos, special presentations and more Bumatai, Soul Kitchen will perform until closing time.
Food trucks, a fire truck and a bouncy castle will add to the fun at this pet- and family-friendly event. The festivities will be will be broadcast “live” on Akakū Channels 53, 54 and 55.
