Tonight: Free Screening of ‘Theory of Everything’

AARP Hawai‘i will present a free screening of The Theory of Everything at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center tonight, Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 6 to 8:15 p.m.

The screening is made possible by I Heart Caregivers, a storytelling initiative launched by AARP to recognize tens of thousands of family caregivers in the state who help older parents, spouses and other loved ones live independently in their own homes.

The Theory of Everything is about renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and his wife, Jane Wilde. While studying at Cambridge, Hawking, 21, is diagnosed with an earth-shattering illness. With Jane at his side, he continues his studies, and despite impossible odds, breaks new ground in medicine and science.

Actors Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones illuminate the struggles of caring for a loved one and the emotional roller-coaster caregivers go through. Redmayne won the 2015 Oscar for “Best Performance by an Actor” in a leading role.

In 2014, AARP launched I Heart Caregivers to recognize millions of Americans who perform a great labor of love each and every day. AARP honors these unsung heroes by sharing their stories and raises their voices at www.aapr.org/iheartcaregivers. Families are encouraged to add the story of a caregiver they know to be recognized on the I Heart Caregivers website.

An estimated 154,000 family caregivers in Hawai‘i help older loved ones with everything from medication and medical care, meals, bathing, dressing, chores and more. In a recent survey of the state’s registered voters, ages 45 and over, more than half (53 percent) said they are currently providing or have provided unpaid care to an adult loved one. More than three in five  residents (63 percent) said it is likely that they will provide unpaid care to an adult loved one in the future.
