Voting Opens to “Name a Baby Sea Turtle”
The Maui Ocean Center is accepting submissions for its “Name a Baby Sea Turtle Contest,” from now through Nov. 20, 2015. The public is invited to vote via the Maui Ocean Center’s Facebook page or at the following direct link. Contest winners will be announced the week of Nov. 23rd.
The descriptions of each of the turtles were provided by the team that cares for them daily and potential names were selected by staff members and volunteers.
The Maui Ocean Center welcomed the six new green sea turtle hatchlings to the facility’s Turtle Lagoon in September.
The turtles are listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act and are on temporary loan from Sea Life Park Hawaiʻi as part of an educational loan program authorized by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
Turtle #3 is described as full of energy, petite, a great diver, and was the first one of the group to dive down. Potential names include: ʻĀlapa (athletic and active); Luʻu (to dive, plunge); Luʻuliʻimikimiki (diver, small and energetic); Lele (squirt); Miki Liʻi (small, tiny, quick, active, nimble); Kao lele (fireworks); Makalehakananiokawai (to wonder the beauty of the ocean). Turtle #6 is described as independent, evasive, and keeps to itself. Potential names include: Mehameha (solitude); Hūnā (to hide, conceal, disguise); Eapilikino (independent and private one); Makoa (brave man); Kuakahi (standing alone with a single purpose); Kūkona (freedom); or Makalehakananiokawai (to wonder the beauty of the ocean). Turtle #5 is described as feisty, spicy, aggressive and on the move. Potential names include: ʻEleu mikimiki (lively one, energetic); Pāʻani (joking, playful, amusing); Koa (fighter); Kolohe (rascal); ʻEu (playful, animate, rascal); or Makalehakananiokawai (to wonder the beauty of the ocean). Turtle #1 is described as a sweetheart, shy and passive. Potential names include: Laʻi (tranquil); Maluhia (peace, quiet, serenity); Kuʻuipohilaliha (shy, sweetheart); Hilahila (bashful, shy); ūpē (humble, bashful); Makalehakananiokawai (to wonder the beauty of the ocean). Turtle #2 is described as reserved, chill and endearing. Potential names include: Hiwahiwa (precious, beloved and darling); Mālie (calm, quiet, still and gentle); Hoʻāloha lohaʻolu (endearing and cool); Keanu (chill breeze); Mōhalu (at ease, relaxed); Makalehakananiokawai (to wonder the beauty of the ocean). Turtle #4 is described as very dark in color, flaps a lot, friendly, kind eyes, squirms a little when getting cleaned. Potential names include: Māhie (delightful, to cast a shy glance) ; Pōlani (handsome, beautiful, clean, pure); ʻIlikoumāliepihaʻeu (dark, gentle and playful); Aheahe (gentle breeze); Kūlepe (rascal); Lipaki (liberty); or Makalehakananiokawai (to wonder the beauty of the ocean).
