The Sustainable Living institute of Maui at UH Maui College is offering a five-session training in garden pests and diseases beginning Jan. 13 and continuing the next for four Wednesdays from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

A Saturday morning lab is scheduled in the SLIM garden on Jan. 23 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Professional arborist and gardener Susi Mastrioanni will instruct participants in integrated pest management. This process is used on most farms today to identify problems, monitor and determine harmful thresholds, using diverse management strategies to control pests and diseases.

Mastrioanni will cover identifying common pests, diagnosing plant health and disease, as well as cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical controls to avoid and manage common pests and diseases.

“In my experience, insects and diseases are the number one concern for landscapers, gardeners and farmers,” said Mastrioanni. “Learning how to manage these safely and effectively is key to successful growing.”

The price is $239.
