Maui police have blocked off a portion of Kilou Street in the Oceanview Estates area of Waiehu following a report of a sinkhole on Wednesday afternoon, March 16, 2016.

The report was made at around 1:30 p.m. fronting a residence at 1306 Kilou Street.

The hole measured about 4 feet long and several feet wide along the north shoulder of the road.

Views into the gaping hole showed some exposed roots and concrete from a portion of the roadway had already dropped below the surface.

A patrol officer was on scene and was directing traffic around the sinkhole while county crews respond.

It is unclear at this point what caused the hole, but steady rains were reported in the area throughout the day.
