Old Kahului Store Demolished
Demolition work began this morning on the Old Kahului Store located at 55 East Kaʻahumanu Avenue in Central Maui. The building, located just west of the Old Kahului Railroad Building and across the street from the Longs Drugs Store at the Maui Mall was condemned according to our sources.
In more recent years the plantation green facade was capped with white lettering that indicated the structure dated back to 1916, but sources say it had been remodeled and changed and was not considered an historic structure.
As parts of the building came down on Tuesday morning, spectators watched and wondered what would become of the area, which had served as a spot for tenants ranging from a sewing store to chiropractic offices and a beauty salon in more recent memory.
According to County property records, the parcel belongs to the State, Harbors Division. Sources say the building will come down in its entirety over the next couple of days. It will remain an open and flat area that will be fenced in and used by harbor customers to pickup “less than container loads” shipped via Young Brothers to Kahului Harbor.
