Father’s Day Event to Benefit Kēōkea Dad

Mark calendars for a Father’s Day event benefiting an Upcountry dad, whose home burned down.

Uncle Tommy Baclig lost his Kēōkea homestead house, truck and belongings to an accidental fire May 24.

Earlier, the Kēōkea Homestead Farm Lots Association had collaborated with Maui Classic Cruisers to host a community celebration honoring Valley Isle dads from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 19.

Organizers have planned for the free event at Kēōkea Marketplace to present vintage hot rods, oldies-but-goodies music, games, food, a silent auction, rummage sale and “Vote to Rise” voter registration. Now, event proceeds will benefit Baclig, organizers said.

At the June 19 event, adults and keiki will be able to test their skill at horseshoes, ring toss and basketball hoops, plus Hawaiian lawn games of ‘ulu maika (bowling) and moa pahe‘e (large darts). Homestead members will sell grilled hot dogs, chips, beverages, salads and liliko‘i-chile super shots. A silent auction will feature new and lightly used recreational items, such as 8-foot foam surfboards, coolers, air mattresses and a floating-island flotation device.

Attendees may dress in 1950-60s attire, like bobby socks and saddle oxfords. They should bring hats, sunscreen, umbrellas, beach chairs or blankets, and jackets or sweaters to the Upcountry activity.

Kēōkea Marketplace is located at the 17 Mile Marker of Kula Highway, at Ka‘amana Street. This inaugural event will not host crafters as at prior Kēōkea open markets; for the normally wide range of craft-and-food vendors and community-information booths, plan to attend the Sept. 3 Kēōkea Ho‘olaule‘a or Nov. 5 Holiday Crafts at Kēōkea Marketplace event.
