Haʻikū Woman Suffers Fatal Injuries in Baldwin Avenue Crash

A Maui woman suffered fatal injuries and two others were hospitalized, one in critical condition, following a deadly motor vehicle accident on Baldwin Avenue in Pāʻia on Tuesday, June 7, 2016.
The accident was reported at approximately 5:27 p.m. on Baldwin Avenue, west of Mahi Kō Street.
Police say a blue 2011 Nissan Altima four-door sedan, was traveling eastbound on Baldwin Avenue, when it crossed left of center on a right curve in the roadway, colliding into a white 2015 Tesla model-S two-door sedan, traveling westbound on Baldwin Avenue.
The female operator of the Nissan Altima was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police reports. Maui police have since identified the woman as 20-year-old Sydnee L. Apao of Haʻikū.
The front seat passenger of the Nissan Altima, a 19-year-old female from Pāʻia, was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room in critical condition.
The operator of the Tesla Model-S, a 65-year-old woman from Makawao, was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
A preliminary police investigation revealed that Apao and the operator of the Tesla Model-S were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision. The front seat passenger of the Nissan Altima was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to Maui police.
The involvement speed, drugs and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
This was the ninth traffic fatality on Maui county roads in 2016, compared to four at the same time last year.

Emergency crews are responding to a report of a two vehicle accident on Baldwin Avenue. Injuries are reported and traffic was initially being diverted from the mill up Baldwin. Later, police issued an advisory saying Baldwin is temporarily closed and Skill Village is accessible to residents only via the mauka side of Baldwin Ave. The road was reopened shortly after 10 p.m.
