Kalakupua Playground Grand Opening Celebration, Aug. 20
A grand opening celebration will be held this Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016 at 10 a.m. for the Kalakupua Playground at the 4th Marine Division Memorial Park in Haʻikū.
Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa is scheduled to be on hand to present a proclamation, and other local dignitaries will also attend, including Council Chair Mike White and Haʻikū Community Association President Lucienne De Naie.
Playground Founder Karen Cooper and Haʻikū Community Association Playground Committee Chair Jennifer Livingston will be honored alongside volunteers and donors.
The playground was built in 2004, but was closed in 2012 due to disrepair.
“For the past three years a volunteer committee, lead by Jennifer Livingston and supported by the Haʻikū Community Association, has been working to restore the Kalakupua Playground,” said Tim Wolfe, Haʻikū Community Association Treasurer in an event calendar announcement. “Through their efforts, the playground is now open again and ready for Maui families to enjoy.”
Maui singer Nara Boone will provide entertainment during the weekend event and light refreshments will be served. The public is invited to bring a picnic lunch and stay to play on the playground after the ceremony.
