Unscheduled Cane Fire Chars 35 Acres of Haleakalā Ranch Lands
An unscheduled cane fire burned an estimated 300 acres of HC&S land on Saturday before spreading mauka into Haleakalā Ranch Lands and burning another 25 acres on Sunday.
The cane fire was first reported Friday as crews were mopping up a brush fire off of Pūlehu Road makua of the “Y” at Ōmaʻopio and Pūlehu Road intersection.
Crews from HC&S worked to control the fire before seeking assistance from the Maui Fire Department. On Sunday, three helicopters were dispatched to conduct water drops as the fire spread rapidly during a period of high winds.
Crews were assisted by 16 firefighters from Kula, Kahului, Wailuku, and Wailea and three bulldozer operators from Haleakalā Ranch and Goodfellow Bros. Construction.
Fire crews continued to patrol the area checking for hot spots overnight.
