An unscheduled cane fire burned an estimated 300 acres of HC&S land on Saturday before spreading mauka into Haleakalā Ranch Lands and burning another 25 acres on Sunday.

The cane fire was first reported Friday as crews were mopping up a brush fire off of Pūlehu Road makua of the “Y” at Ōmaʻopio and Pūlehu Road intersection.

Crews from HC&S worked to control the fire before seeking assistance from the Maui Fire Department. On Sunday, three helicopters were dispatched to conduct water drops as the fire spread rapidly during a period of high winds.
