Lahaina Worker Dies in Car Wash Accident

Maui police are investigating a motor vehicle accident reported at the Wash It Hawaii car wash located on Keawe Street in Lahaina on Monday morning, Oct. 10, 2016.
Police say the incident was reported at around 8:35 a.m.
According to police reports, a worker was operating a blue Hyundai multipurpose vehicle and attempting to park the vehicle at the exit of the car wash. The operator was partially outside of the vehicle when it inadvertently reversed back through the car wash.
Police say the vehicle collided into the interior of the car wash several times, at which time the operator was ejected from the vehicle. The vehicle then collided into a silver Nissan multipurpose vehicle which was stopped at the entrance of the car wash.
The operator of the Hyundai suffered injuries and died at the scene. He was identified as Scott Kawabata, 44, of Lahaina.
The operator of the Nissan was not injured.
The involvement drugs and alcohol has not been determined and are under investigation.
This was Maui County’s 16th traffic fatality in 2016, compared to 18 at the same time last year.
