High Surf and Wind Advisories Extended Through Tonight

The National Weather Service has continued a High Surf Advisory for east-facing shores of Maui and Moloka‘i, in effect until 6 p.m. this evening, Sunday, Oct. 23. The NWS has also extended a Wind Advisory for portions of Maui and Lāna‘i, also in effect until 6 p.m. today.

A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing rip currents and localized beach erosion.

Strong trade winds will maintain elevated rough surf along east facing shores of most islands through today.

Surf will be between 5 to 8 feet on east facing shores of Molokai and Maui..

Forecast surf heights are estimates of the height of the face or front of waves.

Expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoer, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercies caution.

Winds will be from the northeast at 15 to 30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH.

Strong high-pressure north of the state will produce strong and gusty trade winds that will be enhanced over and downwind of terrain on Lāna‘i and Maui.

Strong wind gusts will cause loose objects to blow around, and could result in downed tree branches, and localized power outages.

Driving high-profile vehicles may become difficult. Motorists should use extra caution.
