Bicyclist Succumbs to Injuries from Makawao Accident

A bicyclist visiting from Omaha, Nebraska succumbed to injuries sustained in a accident with a motor vehicle in Makawao on Sept. 26, 2016.

Police say Christopher Thurber, 63, was pronounced dead at the Queen’s Medical Center on Oʻahu on Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, as a result of the injuries he sustained in the accident.

The accident was reported at around 9:54 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016 on Makawao Avenue near Kee Road in Makawao.

Police say thee bicyclist was traveling north on Makawao Avenue when he failed to negotiate a bend in the roadway and lost control of his bicycle.  According to police reports, the bicyclist fell to the ground and slid into the opposing lane of travel where he was run over by a blue 1998 Dodge Ram truck being operated by a 58-year-old man.

Thurber was initially transported to the hospital in critical condition.

As of Nov. 2, 2016, this is Maui County’s 20th traffic fatality of 2016, and the fourth reported this week.

On Tuesday, Nov. 1, a Wailuku man suffered fatal injuries in a morning crash on the Honoapiʻilani Highway. On Saturday, two individuals died in a head-on collision on the Kūihelani Highway.
