Stalled Motorists, Flooded Bridge in South Maui
Heavy flooding was reported across the island of Maui on Sunday night, most notably resulting in the closure of the Honoapiʻilani Highway; however other parts of the island also experienced severe weather with flooding stranding motorists and flooding a bridge in South Maui.
We received reports of flooding near the Kīhei Bay Vista property as well as the wetland area just south of the old Maui Lu property in North Kīhei.
Area residents say water flowed over the top of the bridge in the area , resulting in stalled cars on both sides of the structure.
There was also a siren malfunction reported in Kīhei. Authorities with the Emergency Management Agency say crews are working to fix the runaway siren. There is NO emergency in the area.
Maui Now Meteorologist Malika Dudley says a surface trough moving through the central islands and an upper level disturbance are the cause of widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms over Maui County this evening. “Rain chances are expected to remain high overnight. As the trough shifts eastward away from Maui, rain chances will decrease over the next couple of hours, but flooding could still be an issue,” said Dudley.
