Stephen Roy Funes, 60, of Kahului, passed away on December 17, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family and close friends. He was born on February 18, 1956 in Puunene, Maui.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku; mass will begin at 11 a.m., and burial will follow at Maui Memorial Park at 12:30 p.m.
Stephen was the owner of S. Funes Trucking.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy (Funai) Funes; son, Rowan Funes; daughter, Rae Ann Purdy; 3 step-daughters, Natia Manaois, Maizie Manaois, and Robin (Ronald) Min; parents, Marvin (Ethel) Funes, and Ethel Tanaka; brothers, Alan Funes, Guy (Cindi) Funes; sister, Stephanie (Jose) Madera Torres; 4 step-brothers, Galen Carvalho, Norman Tanaka, Kurt Tanaka, James Tanaka; and 10 grandchildren.
The family would like to acknowledge Hospice Maui for their compassionate care of Stephen.

Vincent “Vince” Paiva

Vincent “Vince” Paiva
March 16, 1951 – December 9, 2016

A Memorial Service will be held at Ballard Family Mortuary in Kahului on Saturday, January 14, 2017 from 9:00am-11:00am with a prayer service at 11:00am.

Vince graduated from St Anthony High School in 1969. He was the General Manager at the Maui Seaside until he retired in 2014. He then worked part time at the Pukalani Country Club. He also enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family.

Vince is survived by his wife, Hester Hew Paiva; daughters, Crystal (Kevin) DeCoite, Ruby Tulimaiau; sister, Pearl Pruse; grandchildren, Katie DeCoite and Easton DeCoite. He is predeceased by his parents, Vincent Paiva Sr and Dorothy Mendonca Paiva. The family would like to express their gratitude for all the support received from Hospice Maui.

Shirley Gouveia

Shirley Gouveia
November 17, 1946 – December 19, 2016

Shirley Ululanilanakila Gouveia, 70, of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, was born in Kohala on November 17, 1946, and passed away at home on December 19, 2016.She is survived by son Thomas (Tamara) Gouveia of Kailua Kona; daughters Laurie (Stanley) Gomes of Kailua Kona; Remie (Lars) Ige of Kailua Kona; brother Thomas (Theresa) Chesebro Jr. of Mililani; sisters Dolly (Paul) Antonio of Kohala; Joan (Brad) Ballesteros of Kailua Kona; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 with visitation beginning at 8:30 and services at 11:00 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Kailua Kona. Burial to follow at Saints Family Cemetery, Captain Cook.

Harriet Kehaulani Malapit
August 17, 1949 – December 27, 2016

Harriet Kehaulani Rita Kaili Malapit, 67, of Kula, Maui, passed away at her home in Kula on December 27, 2016, surrounded by her hanai family, Mattie Kaeo, Kulani, Pono, Kapio, No’i, Tupu, Waipa “Bozo”, Tessie, Kalae and Manoha Kaeo. She was born on August 17, 1949, in Waimea, Kauai.

A potluck and scattering of her ashes will be held at Maliko Gulch Park to join her husband, Willie Malapit, on Sunday, January 22, 2017, from 12 noon to sunset.

She is survived by loving sister, Dora Lima Daley of Provo, Utah; brother, Harrom H. Kaili, of Anahola, Kauai; daughter, Rose-Ann; 6 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews, Allison, Kimo, Denise, Malanie, Doranna, Karley Joe, Kaina and Keoki.

Rita Cabral Leval
April 17, 1929 – December 22, 2016

Rita Cabral Leval, 87 of Wailuku, passed away on December 22, 2016 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. She was born on April 17, 1929 in Puunene, Maui.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, January 9, 2017, at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku. Mass will begin at 11 a.m. and burial will follow at 1 p.m. at the Maui Veteran’s Cemetery in Makawao.

Rita is survived by her sons, Lester, Robert, and Clifford Leval; daughters, Jeanette Leval, Annette (Gary) Perreira, and Lisa Leval; sisters, Helen Cordeiro, and Theresa Nunes; 18 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Leval; son, Gerald Leval; and grandson, Kenneth Perreira.

Emelia de Aquino
May 26, 1913 – December 19, 2016

Emelia De Aquino, 103, of Wailuku, Maui, passed away on December 19, 2016, at Hale Makua Kahului. She was born on May 26, 1913, in Olowalu, Maui.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at St. Ann’s Church, 40 Kuhinia St, Waihee; mass will begin at 11:00 a.m.; burial will follow, 2:00 p.m., at Maui Memorial Park Cemetery.

Emelia was predeceased by her husband, Pedro de Aquino and son, Andre de Aquino. She is survived by her sons, Frederick de Aquino, Leonard (Carla) de Aquino; daughters, Louisa (George) Pacubas, Candida (John-deceased) Santos, Dolores (Jay-deceased) Conroy, Patricia (Jimmy) Saltiban, Estrellita (Rocky) Marcellus; 27 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Arnold V. Herrick
March 12, 1934 – December 14, 2016

Arnold V. Herrick of Makawao passed away on December 14, 2016 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. For 49 days he fought to survive after an auto accident. Arnold was born on March 12, 1934 in Olympia, Washington.

Visitation will be held from 830-930am on Friday January 13, 2017. At St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1294 Makawao Ave. in Makawao. The funeral mass begins at 9:30am. The internment will follow after mass at Maui Veterans’ cemetery on Baldwin Ave. in Makawao at 11am. Luncheon to follow at St. Joseph Church Gymnasium adjacent to the church.

Arnold served in the United States Navy from 1951 – 1970. As a Seabee he served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts and became a Senior Chief Petty Officer. He also trained recruits at the U.S. Naval Station in San Diego, California. Arnold will receive full military honors at his internment at Maui Veterans’ Cemetery. After retirement he worked at Sierra Electric in California. He loved Maui and moved here in 1989. He worked at Haleakala Waldorf School and Paradise Flower Farms in Kula. He liked to garden and read and enjoyed woodcraft making from custom cuckoo clocks, to ukuleles, small furniture and restoring clocks.

Arnold is survived by his wife, Anne Kiyoko Herrick, son, A. Vince Yukio (Gwen); daughters, Connie Lynn and Jamee Sue; Grandchildren: Gloria, Alex, Nicholas, Annalise, & Ronan. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the National Kidney Foundation www.kidney.org
