An estimated 1,305 gallons of wastewater overflowed along Amala Place in Kahului on Thursday morning, Feb. 9, 2017.

The County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management reported the overflow saying it started at 8 a.m. and was stopped by 8:30 a.m.

The overflow was caused by an air relief valve failure. The wastewater flowed northwest alongside of Amala Place and settled into a puddle off of the roadway. No wastewater reached the ocean.

The valve was closed, the wastewater was pumped up, the spill site was cleared and disinfected, and the Department of Health has been notified.
