Maui Junk Vehicle Disposal Assistance Program Launched

Starting today (March 1, 2017), until funding is exhausted, residents will be able to dispose of one vehicle per year at no processing charge.

The service is made possible through the newly launched Abandoned Vehicles Prevention – Junk Vehicle Disposal Assistance Program, coordinated by the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management.

Residents will be required to register their old vehicles as “Permanently Junked” and then deliver them to the permitted metals recycling facility in Puʻunēnē. Participants will be asked to complete a short survey to monitor the success of the program.

Vehicles must be eligible and owners will be required to present proper documents to participate in the program. Residents should refer to the website www.mauicounty.gov/avm (click on the “Junk Vehicle Disposal Assistance Program” link on the left) to review eligibility criteria and instructions, and to download the proper forms.

“We think that this program will help residents dispose of their junk cars safely and legally while decreasing the number of abandoned vehicles we see on the roads,” said Stewart Stant, Director of the Department of Environmental Management. “This will be a good return on the investment of some of the registration fees that vehicle owners pay every year.”

The Junk Vehicle Disposal Assistance Program is funded through the Highway Beautification and Abandoned Vehicles Fund, which is a portion of annual vehicle registration fees.
