Nakama Named Coordinator for New Maui Homeless Program
The County of Maui Department of Housing and Human Concerns today announced the selection of David Nakama as its Homeless Program Coordinator. Nakama will lead Maui County’s new Homeless Program Division, the first of its kind in the state.
Born and raised on Maui, Nakama studied at Weber State University in Utah and has a BA in Social Work from the University of Hawaiʻi, Mānoa. He has over 18 years of experience as a professional Social Worker with the State Judiciary.
The Homeless Program Division will work in collaboration with service providers, federal, state and county agencies to develop ongoing strategies to end homelessness, with a focus on addressing homeless impacts, prevention, support housing initiatives and public education.
Department officials say this division will also play a key role in developing, utilizing and maintaining the Maui County Coordinated Entry System, and will assist individuals and families in securing permanent housing through utilizing the Homeless Management Information System and the Housing First approach.
