Quonset Hut Destroyed in Kahului Fire
Maui Fire Department crews responded to a structure fire in a quonset hut on Kahale Street near the Kahului Airport at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2017.
A fire engine and water tanker from the Kahului fire station arrived at 5:35 p.m. and found state firefighters from Kahului Airport’s, Airport Rescue & Fire Fighting on scene and the quonset hut fully engulfed in flames. State ARFF and MFD fire crews brought the fire under control at 5:48 p.m. and called it extinguished at 6:06 p.m.
The fire destroyed a 1,100 square foot unoccupied quonset hut across from the Joint Training Center used to train MFD and state ARFF firefighters.
Damage to the structure was estimated at around $3,000. The building was empty and unoccupied so there was no loss to its contents. No other nearby structures were damaged.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
The fire temporarily shut down traffic in both directions on Keolani Place before crews brought the fire under control.
