An estimated 1,237 gallons of wastewater overflowed from a manhole on the Hāna Highway in Kahului on Sunday morning.

The County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management reported that the wastewater overflow occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on May 14, 2017, and was stopped by 11:30 a.m.

County officials say the overflow was caused by a grease blockage in the sewer lateral. The wastewater flowed from a manhole located at 444 Hāna Highway and flowed from the parking lot area into a nearby drainage trench. County authorities say no wastewater reached the ocean.
