Authorities say the 58-year-old visitor from North Carolina, was found floating and unresponsive, and was brought to shore by beach goers.

Firefighters and paramedics from Wailea arrived to find a police officer, resort beach attendants, and a vacationing physician performing CPR on the male victim.

Maui Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said crews continued advanced life-saving measures and the man was later transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
