The event is Maui’s only children’s solo hula competition and features a Keiki division for ages 5 to 12 and ʻŌpio division for ages 13 to 17.
In its 27th year, the cultural competition continues to educate participants and attendees alike in Hawaiian traditions and perpetuates the culture so that the traditions can be carried on for generations to come.
A new addition for 2017, ʻAuana songs must be in the Hawaiian language, written between 1970 to present and either about love for a person or honoring a particular place in Hawaiʻi. This year’s theme for pālua songs are Hapa Haole songs written between 1929 and 1959.
The application process is currently open, and is set to close on July 1st.
To confirm hālau participation, each must submit the following by July 1st:
1. Agreement to Participate (+ kumu(s) individual headshot picture(s)
2. Soloist(s) Haumana Bio(s) (+ headshot picture)
