A Maui man suffered fatal injuries in a motorcycle crash reported just before noon on Sunday on the Hāna Highway (36) in Pāʻia. Maui police have since identified the man as Christopher Andricopoulos, 46, of Kīhei.
The incident was reported at 11:47 a.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2017, on the Hāna Highway near Lae Place.
According to police reports, the collision occurred as a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle was traveling south on Hāna Highway. Police say the motorcycle operator braked suddenly behind a 2001 Nissan pick-up truck stopped in traffic, and was ejected. Police say the motorcyclist then collided into the rear of the truck.
Police say Andricopoulos died while being transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room.
The operator of the truck, a 37-year-old man, was not injured.
Police say a preliminary investigation reveals that Andricopoulos was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is on-going.
This was Maui County’s fourth traffic fatality of 2017, compared to eight the time last year.
