Man Medevaced After Falling 15-Feet from Cliff Trail in Hāna, Maui
Emergency crews from Hāna responded to Kaihalulu Bay in East Maui in the area often referred to as “Red Sand Beach,” just south of Hāna Bay for a male that reportedly fell off a cliff trail leading to the popular beach.
The incident was reported at 4:43 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, 2017.
Firefighters and paramedics were at the trailhead at 4:52 p.m. and made the 15 minute hike to reach the man. Fire officials say the victim, a caucasian male in his mid-30s, was lying on the sand near the end of the trail unconscious but breathing. Witnesses saw the man fall off a 15-foot ledge as he neared the beach.
Emergency crews treated the unconscious man for possible spinal injuries and packaged him into a rescue basket to be airlifted by the fire department’s Air-1 helicopter to the Hāna Ball Park.
At 5:35 p.m., Air-1 transferred the victim to the Hāna Ball Park where a helicopter medevac was standing by. The patient was then flown to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition.
Further information on the male victim was unavailable at last report. The man apparently had been traveling alone and had no identification with him.
