Maui, Lāna‘i to Receive Almost $2M for Veterans Cemetery Improvements

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will award Hawai‘i a total of $1,928,823 in federal funding to improve the Maui Veterans Cemetery in Makawao and the Lāna‘i Veterans Cemetery in Lāna‘i City, U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today.
“These federal funds will help improve our veterans cemeteries on Maui and Lāna‘i, and help us honor the legacies of thousands of brave service members who put their lives on the line to serve our country,” said Sen. Schatz.
Of the total, $1,347,323 is being awarded to fund the raising, realigning and cleaning of 1,255 headstones as well as 25,600 square feet of turf refurbishment at the Maui Veterans Cemetery, which serves 8,900 veterans and their families.
The remaining $581,500 is being awarded to fund the construction of a new water system, an assembly area, as well as 800 linear feet of fence, landscaping, and supporting infrastructure at Lāna‘i Veterans Cemetery, which serves 400 veterans and their families.
