Pā‘ia Man Suffers Critical Injuries in Moped Crash in Mā‘alaea

A Maui man suffered critical life-threatening injuries in a moped crash on the Honoapi‘ilani Highway on Friday afternoon.

The incident was reported at 3:01 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018 on the Honoapi‘ilani Highway, south of North Kīhei Road in Mā‘alaea.

Maui police say the crash occurred as a black 2011 Kaitong moped, operated by a 48-year-old Pā‘ia man, was traveling south within the outer lane of Honoapi‘ilani Highway. The man lost control of his moped and fell onto the roadway. Police say he sustained critical life-threatening injuries as a result and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

One lane was closed for about three hours as police conducted their investigation.

The involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol are still pending as the investigation is ongoing.
