Recommendations on master plan for Maui County’s aquatic facilities will be presented to the public during a meeting on Thursday, June 14, 2018.

The public meeting will be held 6:30 p.m. at the Waikapū Community Center.

A consultant team for the Department of Parks and Recreation will cover recommendations for new facilities; renovation of existing pools; and a description of projected costs for development, staffing and maintenance.

For the last year, the department has been working with one of the country’s leading aquatic engineering and design consulting firms, Counsilman-Hunsaker, to prepare a master plan for the county’s aquatic facilities. Preparation of the master plan comprised several phases, including a review of existing facilities and a series of community open houses held throughout the county.

“Our aquatic facilities are aging and require constant maintenance. They’ve been built piecemeal over the last 50 years and we’ve never had a long-term vision for these facilities,” said Kaʻala Buenconsejo, Parks and Recreation director. “We are looking forward to taking the next steps in this process to be able to honor the rich history of swimmers in Maui.”
