Hawaiian composer and recording artist, Kuana Torres Kahele, returns to Concerts at The Shops with a complimentary performance on Wed., Aug. 15 at 5:30 p.m.

Hilo-born Kuana Torres Kahele is a recipient of multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards and is well known for his genre-bending creativity. He comes from a revered lineage of Hawaiian musicians including Bill Aliiloa Lincoln, Victor Kala and George Holokai. He credits much of his success to Johnny Lum Ho, renowned Kumu Hula and esteemed composer, who took a young Kahele under his wing in 1991. Kahele’s music history also includes connecting with Kehau Tamure to form the multi award-winning Na Palapalai, where they gained critical acclaim for reviving Hawaiian classics in addition to original compositions.

In June of 2015, Kahele starred in Disney Pixar’s hit movie, “LAVA,” as both the narrator and male lead, “Uku”, a lovesick volcano. Kahele’s theme song from “LAVA” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Soundtrack chart and remained there for several months, pushing him to worldwide fame. Today, Kahele’s original composition “Ke Any O Waimea” is the most popular song in Japan.

Concerts at The Shops is a free monthly concert series that is open to the public and features headlining musicians from all the Hawaiian Islands. This music event occurs on the third Wednesday of every month from 5:30-7pm with performances at the main Fountain Courtyard.

In a continued effort to give back to the community, The Shops at Wailea supports a different Maui non-profit each month with 60% of the special event parking fees going back to the non-profit. August’s non-profit recipient is Assistance Dogs of Hawai‘i. The Shops’ goal is to enrich the community through exploration and discovery in the arts and music while supporting local businesses and non-profit partners. The four-hour special event parking voucher is available for $5 and can be purchased at the nonprofit’s parking table.
