American Veterans Hawaiʻi Receives Grant to Preserve ʻEwa Battlefield

The American Veterans Hawaiʻi organization received a $63,000 grant from the National Park Service for a new research project.

AVH will use the grant to research and catalog historic maps and photos of the ʻEwa Plain Battlefield. The battlefield was a part of the World War II surprise attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy and was a major staging area for both the Coral Sea and Midway battles.

The grant was awarded by the NPS’ American Battlefield Protection Program, which aims to help states and local communities create educational and recreational opportunities to preserve their history.

Federal, tribal, state, and local governments, nonprofit organizations, and institutions of higher education are eligible for these grants, which are awarded yearly. Since 1996, ABPP has awarded 600 grants to help preserve historic battlefields throughout the nation.
