17th Richard Ho’opi’i Leo Ki’eki’e Falsetto Contest winner Kaulike Pescaia.

Maui’s Kaulike Pescaia earned the championship title at the 2018 Richard Hoʻopiʻi Leo Kiʻekiʻe Falsetto Contest held last night at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua.  The 17th annual event is part of the Festivals of Aloha series that celebrates the Hawaiian culture in September and October at various venues throughout Maui County

Pescaia was among the contestants showcasing their high-register voices in the unique style of falsetto. He also won the competition’s Hawaiian Language award. His winnings include a two night stay at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua with ocean deluxe accommodations, spa treatments and two breakfast meals throughout his stay.

Second place honors went to Makana Arce of Molokaʻi and Koakane Mattos of Maui won a 3rd place finish. The Sheldon Keahiawakea Brown music award went to Makana Arce of Molokaʻi.

The event’s Hawaiian Language judges were Kuʻulei Alcomindras Palakiko and Zachary Lum. The music judges were Kamaka Kukona and Kehau Tamure.

Event sponsors included: the Ritz Carlton Kapalua, Goodfellows Brothers, County of Maui, Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority, Hōkūnui Farm, Kobe Japanese Steakhouse and Missing Polynesia.
